Install & activate Pro
Free and Pro are the same plugin. Pro is a second download that replaces the free one and unlocks the extra features with a licence key. Your settings stay where they are throughout.
Installing
The free version installs like any other plugin: search for “Pay for Payment for WooCommerce” under Plugins → Add New, or download it from WordPress.org (opens in a new tab). You do not need it installed first to buy Pro, and you do not need to remove it if it already is.
Pro is not on WordPress.org — a paid plugin can’t be. After buying you get two emails from Freemius, and both matter:
- One with your licence key and the download link for the Pro zip.
- One with the login details for your Freemius account, where the key, your invoices and your activations live from then on.
Download the zip, then go to Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin and activate it. If the free version is active, it switches itself off at that point — that is the intended upgrade, not an error, and nothing is lost when it happens. Running both at once is what would break, so the plugin doesn’t let you.
Nothing to reconfigure
- Free and Pro read the same settings, so every fee you had set up is still set up.
- Going back the other way works too. Deactivate Pro, reactivate the free version, and your configuration is still there — the Pro-only parts of it simply stop being applied.
Activating Pro
Activating the plugin opens the licence screen. Paste the key from the first email and confirm — that is the whole step, and the Pro features are on the moment it succeeds.
The settings live at WooCommerce → Settings → Pay for Payment, which is also where the plugin drops you after activation.
Lost the key? You never need to ask me for it. The licence recovery page (opens in a new tab) sends it again to the email address that bought it.
During activation you’ll be asked whether to share diagnostic data. It is genuinely optional — decline it and the licence still activates and everything still works. What it covers is on the privacy page.
Sites and staging
Your plan sets how many production sites can run Pro at once — one, five or twenty-five. Development and staging installs don’t count against it and never consume an activation.
Freemius treats all of these as non-production:
localhost, on any port- the
.local,.test,.staging,.devand.exampleendings dev.,test.,stage.andstaging.subdomains- managed hosts’ own staging domains — WP Engine, Kinsta, InstaWP and others
So a single-site licence covers your live store and its staging copy. If your staging site sits on a domain that doesn’t match any of those patterns, tell me and it can be added to the list rather than costing you a slot.
Moving a licence to another site
Expected and fine — rebuilds, migrations and handovers all need it. Two ways round:
-
From the old site, deactivate the licence on the plugin’s own licence screen before you take the site down. This frees the slot immediately.
-
From your account, if the old site is already gone. Open your licences (opens in a new tab), find the site and release it there.
Then activate the same key on the new install. Agency licences may be used on client sites you build and maintain.
Updates
Pro updates arrive through the normal WordPress updates screen, delivered by Freemius rather than WordPress.org. Nothing extra to install for that — an activated licence is what authorises them.
An expired licence stops receiving them. The plugin keeps running; it simply stops being offered new versions until the licence is renewed.
What happens when a licence expires
The Pro features switch off and the plugin carries on as the free version. Concretely:
- The first fee on each payment method keeps being charged. Your store does not silently stop charging fees.
- The Pro-only rules stop applying — conditions, the extra fee tiers, fees on order-pay and manually created orders, the fee as a product line, the display controls (hiding the fee on the cart, showing it beside a method at checkout), the order-pay method preview and the fee watchdog.
- Nothing is deleted. The whole configuration stays in the database, so renewing brings it back exactly as it was — there is no reconfiguration step.
Cancelling a subscription doesn’t take effect immediately either: the licence runs to the end of the term you already paid for.
Invoices, renewals and refunds
Freemius is the Merchant of Record, so they handle all of it. From your Freemius account (opens in a new tab) you can download invoices, add your company and VAT details to them, change the payment card, cancel a subscription and request a refund.
Annual licences renew by themselves. Freemius sends a reminder about 30 days ahead, but it’s a courtesy rather than a guarantee — if a renewal date matters to you, put it in your own calendar.
Refunds run for 14 days; the refund policy (opens in a new tab) has the exact terms. Write to me before you ask for one — if something is broken, a fix is usually faster.
Prefer not to commit at all yet? The 7-day trial takes no card and ends on its own.

- Free version: the WordPress.org support forum (opens in a new tab).
- Pro: the Support link on the plugin’s own settings screen. That reaches me directly, and it carries your licence with it so I know what you’re running. By email, support@payforpayment.com works too — mention your licence key or the site it’s on, since a plain email can’t carry it for you.
- Billing and licences: your Freemius account (opens in a new tab) — they’re the Merchant of Record, so they can act on payments in ways I can’t.
Stuck on any of this? Write to me — licence problems get answered the same day.
