Terms, privacy & refunds

The free plugin is distributed under the GPL-2.0-or-later licence through WordPress.org, and Pro is distributed under the same licence to customers who hold a valid licence key. Nothing here limits the rights the GPL gives you over the code.

The plugin is provided as it is. It has run on more than ten thousand stores for over a decade, and it is still your responsibility to test a fee configuration on a staging copy before it charges real customers. I don't accept liability for revenue lost to a misconfigured fee, a conflicting plugin, or a gateway that behaves unexpectedly.

Surcharging some payment methods is restricted or prohibited in some countries and by some payment providers — PayPal's user agreement is the common example. Checking what applies where you sell is on you, not on the plugin.

A licence gives you the Pro features, updates and support for its term. When the term ends the Pro features switch off and the plugin carries on as the free version: the first fee configured on each payment method keeps being charged, while the Pro-only rules — the extra fee tiers, conditions, fees on order-pay and manually created orders, and the watchdog — stop applying. Nothing is deleted. The whole configuration stays in the database, so renewing brings it back exactly as it was.

Your plan sets how many production sites may run Pro at once — one, five or twenty-five. Development and staging installs are unlimited and never consume an activation: Freemius exempts localhost, the .local, .test and .staging endings, dev. and staging. subdomains, and the staging domains of hosts like WP Engine and Kinsta.

Moving a licence between sites is fine and expected: deactivate it on the old install, or free the slot from your account, then activate it on the new one. Agency licences may be used on client sites you build and maintain.

The plugin does not send your orders, customers or products anywhere. Fee configuration and the fees themselves stay in your own database.

Pro checks its licence with Freemius (opens in a new tab), which is what transmits your site URL and the licence key. Activating a licence key sends nothing about you personally.

Freemius also offers diagnostic tracking, and that one is opt-in: refusable at activation and revocable afterwards without losing anything. Opting in shares the name and email address of the WordPress user who opted in, along with the site URL, the WordPress, PHP and plugin versions, and — as a separate permission you can decline on its own — the other plugins and themes installed. Skip the opt-in and none of it is sent.

If you write for support, I keep the email thread for as long as it's useful to both of us and nothing else from it. Buying is handled by Freemius, so your billing details go to them and never reach me beyond what appears on their invoices (opens in a new tab).

This site sets no cookies — none for analytics, none for advertising, none at all. It is served by Cloudflare, which counts page views with its own cookieless Web Analytics (opens in a new tab): no identifier that follows you between pages and nothing that would let me recognise you on a return visit. Cloudflare sees the IP address of every request, as any host must, and page views are reported to me only as totals.

The chat assistant in the corner is an AI, not me. It answers from this site's own pages, it is run for me by Engadin, and it loads on every page — so Engadin sees that a browser opened a page here even if you never type anything. Your IP address is salted and hashed on arrival and never written down. What is kept is the conversation itself, plus the country, city, device class and language worked out from the request.

It sets no cookie either. It keeps three things in this site's local storage in your browser: a conversation id, a short preview of your own messages, and a cached copy of the widget's own appearance. The first two are written only once you start a conversation, and they are what keeps a reply there when you move to another page or come back later. The third lands when the page loads, before you touch anything, and holds nothing but the widget's own colours and dimensions. It does not profile you, which is why there is no consent banner in front of it. Clearing site data in your browser removes it. Conversations and anything you attach are stored in the European Union. The answers themselves are generated by Anthropic and OpenAI in the United States under standard contractual clauses and the EU–US Data Privacy Framework, and neither trains on what you type. Fourteen days, no questions and no argument. Request it from your Freemius account and the money goes back to the card that paid.

If something is broken, though, tell me before you ask for the refund: a fix is usually faster, and it helps the next person too. The exact wording is in the refund policy (opens in a new tab). The seven-day trial exists so it rarely comes up: try Pro on a real store, with real orders, before anything is charged at all.

Annual licences renew by themselves. Freemius sends a reminder about 30 days ahead, but treat that as a courtesy rather than the thing you rely on — mail goes astray. Cancel from your account any time; the licence then runs to the end of its paid term. The full subscription policy (opens in a new tab) says it in full.
